✅ The bird’s elegant wing position ✨

A Black-winged Stilt (and many other wading birds) frequently rest or stand on one leg to conserve body heat (by reducing heat loss through their unfeathered limbs) or to give the other leg a break. When startled or ready to take flight, they don’t take the time to put the other leg down — they just launch from the one that’s already bearing weight.

Observation -1

In calm conditions, they often land gracefully using both legs, with wings held high in a vertical “brake” position to slow down — this is the pose many photographers capture.

Observation -2

The wing stretch is part of stabilizing and braking, but they fold them quickly once stable.

Observation -3

In windier or uneven terrain, they may adjust with one leg first, especially if they’re landing in water or need to balance quickly.
