Hi there!
Welcome🎉 Karibu🌍 ようこそ!🎏😊 வரவேற்கின்றேன்🙏💖! Bienvenido🎉👋
أهلاً وسهلاً 🌟🤗Willkommen🍻👋 स्वागत है 🌈✨
Let’s start with an example! Here’s a screenshot I grabbed from Lightroom Classic that shows a visual of the crop compared to the original image. 👇
How to Calculate the Crop Percentage
To give a precise answer, you can use this simple formula for your crop percentage:
The Math:
Cropped image: 3619 x 2036
Original image: 9568 x 6376
The crop percentage can be calculated like this:
Crop % = (Exported megapixels ÷ Original megapixels)
Or more specifically:
Crop % = (Width_cropped × Height_cropped) ÷ (Width_original × Height_original) × 100
Let’s break it down:
Cropped megapixels: 3619 × 2036 = 7,373,884 pixels
Original megapixels: 9568 × 6376 = 61,010,688 pixels
Crop percentage = (7,373,884 ÷ 61,010,688) × 100 = 12%
Where Do You Find the Dimensions?
Easy! 👌 To get these numbers, head to the Properties > Details section of your photo file. On a Mac, right click > Get Info > More Info
You’ll find the dimensions from the original (RAW) file and the exported (cropped) version. In my case, for the red-headed woodpecker shot, the cropped image is only 12% of the original size! 🌟
Zoom Reach 📷🔭
Now, let’s talk about zoom. You might have noticed I used a 600mm lens for the original shot. But since the crop is 12% of the original, you can think of it like having an 8x zoom lens, which is roughly equivalent to a 4800mm zoom lens. 😲 That's some serious zoom power!
“My Favorite Game of Guessing!” 🎯
You thought that 4800mm reach is wild, right!
But in reality... you know what else is wildly impressive? My ability to estimate the distance between me and the bird. 😂 According to my very optimistic calculations, the woodpecker was about 100-150 feet away from the boat when I snapped this photo. BUT—and this is the fun part—who really knows? I might’ve been looking through my zoomed-in lens like it was a magic window to a bird kingdom and just forgot how far I was. 😆 100 feet? Maybe. 150 feet? Possibly. 200 feet? Oh... that feels too far, but I’m sticking with it! 😎
Conclusion!
So next time someone asks you how much you cropped, you can give them a precise, math-backed answer. But when it comes to estimating distances... well, you might want to just nod and smile. 🤷♂️ I mean, I’ll go ahead and guess 100-150 feet, but take that with a giant pinch of optimism. 😜
